Quantitative respirator fit testing
A correctly selected tight-fitting respirator must form an effective seal against the wearer’s face. Quantitative fit testing uses numerical measurement to assess that seal and produces a fit factor for the respirator being tested.
Sentinel Laboratories provides quantitative respirator fit testing using the TSI PortaCount 8048. Testing can be conducted at our premises or at suitable customer locations.
What the test involves
During the test, the wearer completes a prescribed series of breathing, speaking and movement exercises while the PortaCount measures particles inside and outside the respirator. The resulting fit factor indicates whether the required fit has been achieved.
A separate fit test is required for every respirator make, model, type and size worn. The wearer should bring the exact respirator they use, or intend to use, together with any other personal protective equipment that could affect the face seal.
Suitable respirators
The TSI PortaCount 8048 can be used to test suitable tight-fitting respirators, including filtering facepiece respirators and reusable half and full-face masks. The correct test method and pass level depend on the respirator type.
Results and support
Test results are recorded and a report can be produced for the employer’s respiratory protection records. If a wearer does not achieve an adequate fit, our team can explain the next steps and help identify alternative respirator options for further assessment.
Quantitative fit testing supports a respiratory protection programme but does not replace a suitable risk assessment, correct respirator selection, wearer training, inspection or maintenance.
